I held off on ranting for as long as possible. After all, this is an internet marketing blog, but sometimes I cannot help myself.

Two presidential candidates said this week that they would suspend the gas tax temporarily in order to give relief to consumers. All this does is mislead uninformed voters to vote for a candidate that knows nothing about the economy.

I love politics because I love economics. Unfortunately, none of the candidates this year know a lint lick about running an economy. If they did, they would know that raising the minimum wage hurts the lower class more than it helps them – ironic, because it is the same people that the government tries to help. They would know that when you subsidize something, you get more of it, and that is never a good thing.

And if they knew anything about economics, they would know that the gas tax is the BEST tax that we have! I’m not very clear in my video, because I’m simply ranting, but if anything, the gas tax should be raised. If the tax were to be suspended for a “holiday,” it would simply go back into the hands of the oil companies, because they could easily raise the prices. Furthermore, gas is an inelastic good, which is why they can charge whatever they want.

Finally, what happens when the gas tax is reimposed? People will hate the government for it. If ANYTHING, the next president should raise the gas tax and cut taxes from somewhere else, such as income for the middle class.

The ONLY way that the price of gas will drop is if the dollar strengthens and we consume less oil. Plain and simple.

P.S. Note to all presidential candidates: read a flippin’ economics book. Maybe it’s time to listen to Ron Paul.

As some of you may notice, I finally got around to make the blog look halfway decent. It’s not complete yet, but I’m happy with the new feel.

Anyway, I’ve had the week off of school, because I’m in between terms, and I’ve had some time to digest what I’ve learned from the Mass Control conference. Since returning, I’ve made it a goal to do more with video marketing. I suppose this is ironic, because I’m not doing a video post… anyway…

Jason Moffatt was the best speaker at the conference by far. He discussed little strategies that you can use with video in order to increase your affiliate sales. After all, people hate to read and would much rather see a video.

Interestingly, one of my sites has continually brought in about 1000 visitors a month through TWO videos that I made a few months ago. I haven’t touched the site since, and I’m not optimizing it. Sheesh, if videos can be that effective, I better shore up that site.

However, the best part of the conference was the networking. Meeting people like Travis Sago, Matthew Bredel, and Brian Owens was quite exciting, and I’m looking forward to “masterminding” with them in the future. Lunch and dinner with Travis were eye opening and were a bit of a kick in the pants. Sometimes I forget that this business is as easy as creating landing pages, collecting opt-ins, and matching my customers with relevant digital products. Easy breezy.

The biggest hindrance to my success has been a lack of motivation to grow. Oftentimes, I want to baby my favorite sites when it makes more sense to start something new and get it growing. I can do better in that regard.

I have a few goals since returning: first, I want to have more fun. After all, I’m a college student, and that’s what my customer base has loved about me – I’m young, I’m having fun, and I’m making money. I need to capitalize on that by building a brand and having more fun.

Second, I’m going to build up my business by giving more stuff away. This means starting new websites that “raise the free line.” I have often kept my secrets quiet, but it’s time that I started to share with people. I think that, in doing so, I build a better brand and a bigger customer base.

May Term starts tomorrow morning. I’m looking forward to it, as it is much more relaxed than a traditional semester. I think that I’ll be getting a lot of work done in that time. I have a special project on which I will keep you posted.

I’m still unpacking everything that I learned at the Mass Control Conference… most of my time is spent shoring up my websites and researching some video strategies. In the meantime, here’s a little tip that I used to increase my business by 400%. The secret? Offering discounts.
